Caption
The sitter was the second son of Thomas Jermyn and nephew of Earl of St Albans, who made Henry his heir. Both shared a passion for gambling and women. He married Judith, daughter of Sir Edmund Poley in 1675. He was created Baron Dover in 1685 by James II, for whom he fought at the Battle of the Boyne. Subsequently he made peace with William III, returning to England to his home at Cheveley, near Newmarket.

A three-quarter-length portrait of a man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, fresh complexion, very dark eyes, wearing armour and a crimson cloak, long wig and lace jabot; a battle scene in the left background, in front of a fortified port.
