Summary
Oil painting on canvas (oval), Sir Thomas Hervey, Kt (1625-1694) (after Joseph Brook) by Henry Paert (fl.1676-1698), 1690. Inscribed 'Mr. Thomas Hervey'. An oval head-and-shoulders portrait, with long, dark brown hair. Dark grey lace cravat with dark brown jacket. The sitter was born 25 May 1625, third son of Sir William Hervey, of Ickworth, by Susan, his first wife, daughter of Sir Robert Jermyn. Brother of John Hervey of Ickworth, whom he succeeded in 1676, and father of John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol (1665-1751) by his wife, Isabella May, daughter of Sir Humphrey May, Vice-Chamberlain in the Household of Charles II. He was Vice Chamberlain of the Household to Charles II. He died 27 May 1694, aged sixty-nine.
Provenance
Commissioned by the sitter’s son in 1690; thence by inheritance and descent to the 4th Marquess (1863-1951), until accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of death duties, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
