Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Called Lady Penelope D’Arcy, later Lady Gage and Lady Hervey (c.1594-1661), British (English) School, circa 1640-1661. A three-quarter length portrait of a woman, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a black with white collar and cuffs and cap with black veil, her hands clasped in front. Dark background.
Provenance
Originally at Hengrave Hall. Presumably painted for the sitter and thence by descent. Contents of Hengrave sold 1897. Acquired for Ickworth by the 4th Marquess and Marchioness of Bristol (recorded as being at Ickworth in Farrer, Portraits in Suffolk Houses, 1908). Transferred to the National Trust in 1956.
