Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Hervey, Mrs Edward Gage (1620-1654), follower of Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641), circa 1648-54. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, turned to the left gazing at the spectator. She has a fresh complexion, brown eyes abd brown hair in ringlets, and is wearing a dark green dress trimmed with pearls at bodice, grey stole, pearl necklace and earrings, pearls in her hair, holding a veil in front. Dark background with view of evening landscape in top left corner. The inscription reads: 'Mary, Wife of Sir Edward Gage'. Mary Hervey was the eldest daughter of Sir William Hervey and Susan Jermyn, born in 1620; in 1648 she was married to Edward Gage (c.1626/7–1706/7), created Baronet in 1662, of Hengrave; she died in 1654 (following which her husband successively married four other wives, outliving even the last, and dying in January 1706/7).
Provenance
Gage collection at Hengrave Hall, near Bury St Edmunds. The Gage baronetcy had expired with the death of Sir Edward Rokewode-Gage, 9th Bt, in 1872; the contents of Hengrave were sold up at a large house sale, following the death of his widow, 5-13 August 1897 (some were withheld, or bought back by the new owner (see the list of 59 portraits in Farrer, op.cit., pp.171-185), but others, including the two at Ickworth, were dispersed); on the death of the 4th Marquess (1863-1951), valued for probate; accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of tax and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
