Caption
Sir Thomas Hervey was the eldest son of Sir Nicholas Hervey, Henry VIII’s Ambassador to Emperor Charles V. He was a minor Tudor courtier who served as Knight Marshal to Queen Mary. The arms are Hervey quartered with Niernuyt (for his wife), and the family motto in Latin is inscribed: Nulla Motus Fortuna (Nothing Changes Fate).
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Thomas Hervey (c.1515/20 - 1575), British (English) School, 17th century, possibly after a 16th-century original of circa 1570/75. A three-quarter-length portrait of a mature man, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, wearing a doublet, ruff, fur-lined cloak and black cap, his proper left hand on his sword, his right hand not visible. Coat of arms with Hervey quartering Niernuyt, top right, above the inscription: mid-right, in gold: NVLLA MOTVS FORTVNA/SR. NICHOLAS HERVEY.
Provenance
By family descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
