Summary
Oil painting on panel (oak), Sir William Hervey, MP (1585 - 1660), Anglo-Dutch School, 1620-1630. Inscribed on left 'Sir William Hervey'. A head-and-shoulders portrait of a man, turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, short dark hair with lighter brown pointed beard and whiskers, wearing dark suit of armour, ruff and orange sash; dark background. It is conceivable that the picture was painted in the Netherlands, by a Dutch artist closer to Mierevelt, rather than England as the orange sash would suggests that Sir William maybe fought in the Low Countries.
Provenance

Ickworth, The Bristol Collection (acquired through the National Land Fund and transferred to The National Trust in 1956)
