Summary
Oil painting on panel (arched top), The Madonna and Child, manner of Bartolomeo de Giovanni (fl.1488 - c.1500), circa 1488-1500. A half-length figure of the Madonna, seated, the Child on her lap. She is wearing a red robe covered by a mantle of mellowed dark green lined with brown and with an embroidered gold border. The Child wears a pale blue robe with delicate gold edging, they are placed before a red shell niche with black surround decorated with gold trophies, urns, pomegranates, etc. Both have delicate gold haloes.
Provenance
Unknown, probably acquired in the 19th century; by descent to the 4th Marquess (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
