Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King George III (1738–1820) by studio of Allan Ramsay (Edinburgh 1713 - Dover 1784), circa 1770. A head-and- shoulders portrait, facing, gazing at the spectator, wearing court dress with ermine cape over richly embroidered dove-grey waistcoat. Ceremonial chain around shoulders. Grey powdered wig. This is a copy of the head-and-shoulders of George III as Prince of Wales from Ramsay's full-length state portrait 1757/8, the original of which, commissioned by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, is at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute, Scotland, of which numerous versions exist.
Provenance
Part of the Bristol Collection. Acquired by the National Trust in 1956 under the auspices of the National Land Fund, later the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
