Oil painting on canvas (oval), The Hon. John Hervey, MP (1616-1679), attributed to Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), 1645-50. An oval head-and-shoulders portrait of a young man turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing black with white lawn collar; shoulder length light brown hair. Dark background.
Provenance
Since the sitter died without issue, it was probably amongst the heirlooms inherited by his nephew, John, 1st Earl of Bristol; thence by inheritance and descent to Frederick William, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), for whom catalogued on the death of his cousin, the 3rd Marquess (1834-1907);accepted by HM Treasury in lieu of death duties, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
