Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Frederick William Hervey, 5th Earl of Bristol and later 1st Marquess of Bristol (1769-1859) by Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (Bristol 1769 – London 1830), circa 1806-1811. A three-quarter-length portrait of a man, seated, facing, gazing at the spectator, legs crossed, left over right, holding a book on his knees, wearing black, with white necktie; a peer’s robe on a table, left; background of red curtains, with small landscape beyond on left side. He was Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairsin 1801-3, succeeded his father in the Earldom in 1803 and was created Marquess in 1826. See NT 851744.2 for engraving in Museum Store.
Provenance
Commissioned by the sitter, and in his handwritten list of pictures at Ickworth of around 1829 and around 1837 list as hanging in the Drawing Room; thence by family descent to the 4th Marquess (1863-1951); on whose death valued for probate; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
