Oil painting on canvas, View of Naples with Castel dell'Ovo and Mount Vesuvius seen from the Salita di San' Antonio, by Franz Ludwig Catel (Berlin 1778 - Rome 1856), 1819; previously attributed to Heinrich Schmidt (Saabrück.1740 – Darmstadt 1821) as frame label implies. View from a cliff road, Salita di San' Antonio, looking across the bay. Blue sea, paler blue sky fading to cream. Misty grey mountains in distance with Vesuvius smoking. Below lies a town built to the water's edge. Left foreground - peasants and two donkeys. On right, on cliff overlooking bay, is a grey Italian villa with trees and shrubs.
Provenance
Acquired by Frederick William Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol (1769-1859) in around 1830 and by descent to Rear Admiral Frederick William Fane Hervey, 4th Marquess of Bristol (1863-1951), on whose death valued for probate as by 'Schmidt' [a third also in the Bristol collection until 1993 was most recently with Whitfield Fine Art until sold at Christie's in New York, 8 June 2011, lot 92 as by Pierre-Athanase Chauvin (1774-1832)]; accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury, and transferred to the National Trust in 1956
