Summary
Oil painting on panel, Still Life with Roses, Tulips, Hyacinths and other Flowers in a Classical Urn by Jan van Huysum (1682-1749), signed, on the plinth, to the right, in grey-black: Jan Van Huysum fec., 1710 (?). Still life of roses, tulips, hyacinths, auricula and other flowers in classical urn with gadrooned decoration. Rests on marble ledge with a detailed snail in foreground. Against dark background.
Provenance
William Wells of Redleaf (1768-1847) by 1840, when lent by him to the British Institution (125); his posthumous sale, Christie’s, 12-13 May 1848, lot 39, at which bought by Francis Darby (1783 - 1850) (the buyer is given as ‘Darby’ in the auctioneer’s copy of the catalogue – see NT 814216 (DUD/P/94); by descent to Frances Muriel Cope-Darby (1882-1935), only surviving child of Alfred II Darby of Adcote and Sunnyside (1850-?); Rachel Hamilton-Russell, Mrs Malcolm MacGregor (in whose possession it was recorded, but as on canvas, by H. Isherwood Kay, in a note made in 1936, in the archives of the NG), later (from 1943) subsequently Lady Labouchere (1908-1996), a great-grand-daughter of Alfred I Darby (1807-1852) of Coalbrookdale; stored intermittently with Leggatt Brothers or hung in embassies occupied by Sir George and Lady Labouchere until his retirement and their return to Dudmaston in 1966; lent to the National Trust from 1978; given to the National Trust 3rd November 1993.
