Summary
Oil painting on panel, An Unknown Elizabethan Lady, aged 36 British (English) School, inscribed upper left 1600 art. 36. A half-length portrait of a lady wearing a ruff. She wears a distinctive jewel on her breast, a figure with a plumed helmet between two possible half-figures. A pair of jewels in the same form in her hair, having four diamonds in the middle of diamond circles.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Arthur Radford of Bradninch Manor (d.1925) between 1890 and 1920; by descent to his son, Courtenay Arthur Ralegh Radford (d. 2000), of Culmcott House, Uffculme; loaned to Buckland Abbey whilst leased by the Plymouth County Museum; loan transferred to the National Trust on the expiry of the lease in 1988; bequeathed by Ralegh Radford in 2000
