Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Sumpter, Lady Berners (c.1763-1845) by Robert Scott Tait (1816 - 1897), 1841. A half-length portrait of a mature woman, wife of Henry Wilson,10th Lord Berners, facing, gazing at the spectator, grey hair, centre parting, beneath a white lace frilled bonnet with long hanging bands, wearing a black dress with a white shoulder-cape collar, a gold looped chain with a small posy of flowers. She is seated on a red damask covered chair. Grey background.
Provenance
Mary Wilson (1795-1874), the sitter's fourth child and daughter in 1841; purchased by the National Trust with Sheringham, with grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Countryside Commission, the National Conservancy Council, and several bequests, in 1987
