Oil painting on panel, The Battle of Milvian Bridge by Adam Frans van der Meulen (Brussels 1632 – Paris 1690), signed lower left: 'V. MEULEN' and inscribed on the reverse 'P. Van Der Meulen Pinxt'. Constantine the Great defeated Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD and by doing so became Roman Emperor in the West.
Provenance
In 1782 inventory as Battle piece by ‘Vandenmeulen’ is listed in ‘Closets adjoining Mrs Child’s Dressing Room; on loan from the Earldom of Jersey Trust.
