Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of Temple Bar, London, John Collett (c.1725-80), circa 1770. The view is of the eastern-most extent of the Strand, looking towards Fleet Street through the arch of Temple Bar. It is busy with ladies shopping at a greengrocer's, a group of mummers dancing, a wig maker and a pair of tinkers and various other trades during a May-day procession. The banking premises of Child & Co were at No. 1 Fleet Street - immediately behind and to the right of Temple Bar as we look at it. For many years, this painting was displayed in the bank's dining room. It was removed in 1935 and taken to Osterley. A copy was made to hang in its place at the bank, where it remains today. No. 1 Fleet Street is now occupied by The Royal Bank of Scotland's Child & Co branch.
