Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Young Man by Allan Ramsay (Edinburgh 1713 - Dover 1784). A half-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to right but looking to left; left hand tucked inside breast of coat, with a tricorne hat held underarm, and right hand tucked inside coat pocket. The sitter's hair is powdered and curled and tied back in a black bow; he wears a white cravat with frills and a brown coat edged with gold brocade. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy, ‘European Masters of the 18th century’. 1954-5 (19), as attributed to Allan Ramsay. According to the catalogue of the exhibition, an attribution to Pompeo Batoni has also been suggested. Reproduced in the Illustrated London News, 15 January 1955. [From V&A description]
