Caption
Medley was a painter, illustrator and designer who explored social and humanist themes; this is an example of his later abstract work. He was part of several progressive groups from the 1930s onwards, including the Group Theatre Project who mounted experimental political work, and the anti-fascist Artists International Association. He joined the London Group in 1937. During Word War II he served as a camouflage officer, blurring lines and disguising forms as he has done in this muted landscape.
