Summary

Oil painting on canvas [the two portraits were originally on separate canvases, from which each was transferred- a method much used in France in the 18th (and early 19th?) century- to a single canvas, with a strip of gesso between them, and painted over to disguise the fact], The Dauphin (later King Louis XIV, King of France (1638–1715) and Philippe, duc D’Anjou (later Philippe, duc d’Orleans (1640-1701) as children after Claude Deruet (Nancy 1588 – Nancy 1660), circa 1640.Two portraits in simulated oval gilt frames with 18th-century-style mosaïque laid down on a single canvas. At the left, half-length portrait of the Duc d’Anjou, wearing a lace bonnet with a yellow feather, yellow dress, white lace collar and cuffs, and the cordon of the Order of the St. Esprit; he holds a silver-knobbed stick illusionistically breaking out of the frame. At the right, half-length portrait of the Dauphin, wearing a bonnet with a blue feather, brocade and white lace dress and the Order of the St. Esprit; he holds a Maltese terrier.

Provenance

Probably one of the historical portraits acquired by the 3rd Earl Gower (later 1st Duke of Sutherland, 1758-1833), and subsequently changing hands with the house, which was given to the National Trust, with selected contents, by the 2nd Viscount Astor in 1942
