Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, Princess of Wales (1719–1772) by Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779), 1750. A full-length portrait of a young woman, the wife of Frederick, Prince of Wales, whom she married in 1736, and mother of George III, standing, facing, head slightly inclined to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white satin dress the hem of which is embroidered in gold in a wide band, and an ermine-lined red robe, her left hand is resting on a table on the right on which is her crown, she holds a fold of her cloak in her right hand which is by her side. Engraved by Faber and this inscribed - 'T. Hudson ad Vivum pinxt 1750' as well as with name of sitter.
Provenance
This and the portrait of Prince Frederick were reproduced in an advertisement in the Connoisseur in December 1927, as coming from the collection of Mrs Stratton of Turweston. They were then with the Georgian Galleries, London; presented to the National Trust with house and grounds by Waldorf, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879 - 1952), 1942
