Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Prince Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales (1707–1751) by Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779). 1750. Full-length portrait, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, standing, wearing Garter robes over a blue velvet coat, his left hand resting on the arm a blue upholstered and gilt throne, his right held forward gesturing to a crown on the table on the left.Engraved by Faber and thus inscribed - 'T. Hudson ad Vivum pinxt 1750' as well as with name of sitter. The Prince of Wales rented Cliveden from the daughter of Lord Orkney, who had succeeded to the property, and lived there until his death in 1751.
Provenance
This and the portrait of Princess Augusta were reproduced in an advertisement in the Connoisseur in December 1927, as coming from the collection of Mrs Stratton of Turweston. They were then with the Georgian Galleries, London; presented to the National Trust with house and grounds by Waldorf, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879 - 1952), 1942
