Summary
Oil painting on canvas, George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham KG, PC, FRS (1628-1687), after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680). A half-length portrait, of statesman and dramatist, the son of Charles I’s favourite, and the Zimri of Dryden’s Absalom and Achitophel. He built the first house at Cliveden, of which the terraces alone remain. His architect was William Winde. turning to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing wig, peer's robes and the Order of the Garter, Dark ground, thinly and sketchily painted. Picture light.
