Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, An Enthroned Queen, Flemish, possible Oudenaarde, c. 1580-1610. A queen sits enthroned surrounded by figures including soldiers and boys wearing laurel wreaths, some of whom kneel before her. Some of the soldiers carry bundles of sticks tied to an axe - the ‘fasces’, symbol of the Roman Republic. The tapestry has borders with flowers and scrolling leaves.
