Oil painting on canvas, Caroline Starr Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling (1862-1939) by Sir Philip Edward Burne-Jones (London 1861 – 1926), inscribed: P.B.J. to R.C.K. 1899. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing, turned to the left, left profile, left hand on hip, wearing a green dress. Caroline Starr Balestier was born in 1862. She married Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) the author and poet, son of John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) and Alice Macdonald in 1892. She died in 1939. They had three children: Josephine Kipling (1892-1899), Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 – 1976), John Kipling (1897- killed in action 1915)
