Summary
An oak centre table, English, mid-17th century. The octagonal pegged top above plained friezes and raised on three block- and parallel baluster-turned legs joined at the centre by an open plank shelf, plain stretchers below. -- This is a rare table of an early date. This type of table was the forerunner of the 'cricket' table - a table with three legs - which was so popular in the 18th century.
Provenance
Listed in the Parlour in the inventory taken at Bateman's in 1939. Bequeathed by Caroline Starr Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling (1862-1939) with Bateman’s and its contents.
