Summary
An oak bombe bureau cabinet, Dutch, late 18th/early 19th century. Topped by a cabinet with arched, shaped and moulded cornice centred by a flat urn stand. The single door and sides glazed and with astragal moulding, and enclosing a pair of shaped shelves. The bureau base with hinged fall enclosing an interior fitted with shaped divisions and eight short drawers around a central cupboard door, the well fitted with a sliding cover secured by a catch inside the small cupboard. With lopers and two short and two graduated long drawers, cockbeaded and fitted with brass handles and escutcheons. The bracket feet later replacements. With two keys.
Provenance
Visible in the Parlour in the photograph taken in 1919. Listed in the Parlour in an inventory (p.2) taken at Bateman's in 1939. Bequeathed by Caroline Starr Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling (1862-1939) with Bateman’s and its contents.
