Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Architectural Capriccio (after Panini) attributed to Francis Harding (fl.c.1730 - 1760) after Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691 - 1765). Constantine's arch is seen side-on on the right and the Colosseum is on the left with the pyramid of Caius Cestius, larger than life and out of scale, in the background. In the foreground on the left is the Mausoleum of the Giulii from Glanum in (now St Rémy) Provence.
Provenance
Payments to Harding by Henry Hoare between 1745 and 1758;possibly in Stourhead House in 1762 thence by descent to Sir Henry Hugh, 3rd Bt (1762-1841), who lived at Wavendon. Brought from Wavendon by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare 6th Bt (1865 - 1947) and Alda Weston, Lady Hoare (d. 1847) after Stourhead fire of 1902, in 1913. Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
