Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Bloody Shouldered Arabian, by John Wootton (Snitterfield c.1682 – London 1765), 1724 - 28, signed: J.Wootton fecit. A groom in Turkish clothing on the right leans on his left elbow against the plinth of a column and holds in his right hand the rein of an Arabian stallion with a bloody shoulder. Set in a landscape. This celebrated grey stallion was brought to England from Aleppo, Syria around 1720 and entered the stables of Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer (1689-1741) as a stud horse.
Provenance
Painted for Henry Hoare II (1705-85) in 1728 and thence by descent. Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
