Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Frances Ann Acland, Lady Hoare (1735/36 - 1800) by Angelica Kauffman RA (Chur 1741 – Rome 1807), signed: Angelica Kauffmann pinx. and possibly commissioned circa 1773. A three-quarter length portrait of Lady Hoare, second wife of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt. She is seated to the right, looking outwards, wearing a red dress and a green cloak over her left arm. Her right hand is resting on a book placed on the plinth of a marble head of Clio (the muse of History).
Provenance
Possibly commissioned in 1773 and thence by decent; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
