Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Interior of St Peter's at Rome by Francis Harding (fl. c.1730 – 1760) Overmantel painting after Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691 - 1765) whose original version with the visit of Cardinal de Polignac depicted is in the Louvre, Paris and another variant in the National Gallery, London. The view of the basilica is from the left of the main entrance looking towards the high altar. At the right centre, by the second arch, is the Cardinal, in red, and his attendants.
Provenance
Acquired by Henry II Hoare (1705-85);in the parlour of Stourton House in 1754, seen by Walpole in 1762, who thought it to be by Panini and thence by descent;given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
