Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Anne Hoare, Mrs Richard Hoare (1737-1759) playing a Cittern (after Francis Cotes) by Samuel Woodforde, RA (Ansford 1763 - Ferrara 1817), after 1757. A half-length portrait of a seated woman, looking to the left with a red curtain behind her, playing a cittern. The sitter was the daughter of Henry Hoare II and married her cousin Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt who was only created a baronet after her death in 1759. She wears a satin dress embroidered with flowers and elaborately decorated with lace and lace collar.The painting is a copy of the pastel by Francis Cotes (London 1726 - London 1770) in Stourhead House the companion picture of which is dated 1757, a year after her marriage and two years before her death.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
