Oil painting on canvas, Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt (1734/5 - 1787) (after Francis Cotes) by Samuel Woodforde, RA (Ansford 1763 - Ferrara 1817). A half-length portrait after a pastel portrait by Francis Cotes (London 1726 - London 1770) of 1757 of Sir Richard Hoare standing in front a window and shutter, on the left, still at Stourhead, NT 730732. He is looking towards the right, with his left hand on his hip and holding pen and paper in his right hand. He wears a grey coat, white stock and blue waistcoat with gold buttons and trimming.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
