Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Tomb of the Plautii and the Ponte Lucano, Italian (Roman) School, circa 1700. A mountainous landscape with a two arched bridge with tower and gateway in the centre; travellers on a path in the foreground, and a man fishing. The tomb of the Palutius family is a cylindrical first-century funerary monument of Travertine stone, which stands on the Via Valeria, approximately two miles west of Tivoli. On the road from Rome to Tivoli, the tomb was one of the first sights on the plain of the Campagna, and, in conjunction with the adjacent Ponte Lucano, it was a popular subject for artists in particular.
Provenance
Acquired by Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) from the estate of William Benson Earle (1740-1796) and thence by descent; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
