Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Head of Saint Peter (after Reni), possibly by Samuel Woodforde (Ansford 1763 - Ferrara 1817), circa 1800. An early nineteenth-century picture in the style of the seventeenth-century Bolognese School. A bearded old man sits, half-length, in a grey-green cloak, with his head resting on his left hand, weeping, whilst looking upwards towards the left.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
