Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Parr, 'Old Parr' by Samuel Woodforde, RA (Ansford 1763 - Ferrara 1817), circa 1800-17. A portrait of a bearded old man, half-length looking towards the left.Traditionally called 'Old Parr' in 1828. Thomas Parr was said to have been born in 1493, to have lived the reigns of ten sovereigns, to have married a second wife when he was 120 and to have had a child by her, and to have died after being brought to London as a curiosity, in 1635, aged 152.
Provenance
Acquired by Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838); given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
