Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Pyramid of Cestius with a Figure resting by a Stout Pine possibly by Pietro Bianchi (Rome 1694 – Rome 1740). Behind the large Roman pine tree in the centre ground stands the ancient pyramid of Cestius amongst ruined buildings. It was built in Rome between 18 BC - 12 BC as a burial chamber for Gaius Cestius Epulo. In the foreground on the right sits a figure dressed in red and blue.
Provenance
Acquired by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) either between 1785-87 or 1788-91; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
