Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Annunciation, after Francesco Albani (Bologna 1578 -Bologna 1660), Italian School early 17th century. At bottom right the Virgin Mary reads a book and rests her left elbow against an ionic capital. She gestures in alarm and looks across towards the left at the winged figure of the Angel Gabriel. The angel’s arms are crossed against his chest and he is accompanied by a cherub holding lilies. Above, resting on clouds to left and right are several cherubim and also seraphim in left and right corners of the painting. At top centre the head of a bearded old man and a pair of hands represents God the Father who releases the white dove of the Holy Spirit.

In house by 1800, acquired by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) btween 1785-87 or 1788-91; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
