Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Madonna and Child with Four Saints, Italian (Venetian) School, early 18th century. The Madonna and Child appear on a bed of clouds in the sky, like a vision, and are crowned by putti-angels before four saints, two in the foreground on right and left are bishop saints, wearing more sumptuous dress and mitres and holding croziers and behind, on the left, Saint Nicholas, a Franciscan (possibly Saint Francesco de Paola) and Saint Roch on the right. The Bishop with the book, on the right, on which are three circular objects - if stones could be Saint Liberius of Mans or if gold balls, Saint Nicholas of Bari.
Provenance
Acquired by Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838);in house by 1800.Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
