Summary
Pastel on paper, Henry Hoare II (1705 - 1785) by William Hoare of Bath, RA (Eye 1707 – Bath 1792). Inscribed in ink on paper stuck on to old mount and re-applied to back [in Alda, Lady Hoare's hand]: Henry Hoare / II of Stourhead / died 1785 / aged 80. An oval half-length portrait of a gentleman,called 'the Magnificent', right profile wearing a dark blue coat, gold waistcoat, white stock and white powdered wig. A rectangular version of this pastel, probably a replica done for the sitter's daughter, belongs to the Trustees of the Savernake Estate (Earls of Ailesbury) was exhibited at William Hoare of Bath, Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, 1990 (22).
Provenance
Possibly bequeathed by artist's son, Prince Hoare (1755 - 1834); given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
