Summary
Oil painting on panel, A Barn with a Still Life of Kitchen Utensils and a Sleeping Cook by David Teniers the Younger (Antwerp 1610 - Brussels 1690) and Herman Saftleven (Rotterdam 1609 – Utrecht 1685), signed: D. Teniers. In a dimly lit barn, an old woman sleeps in a chair in the left foreground. She wears a dark robe with white collar and cap and holds a cat on her lap. Behind her, in the shadowy recesses of the interior, a man shifts hay with a pole. At the centre of the painting, leaning against a partition supported by timber trusses, is a large jumble of assorted objects. The pile is illuminated by a soft light from the right and a number of the objects are identifiable as cooking utensils, including a large ewer and several pots. The shiny interior of one of the pots catches the light as it lays on its side. Beside it are baskets of onions and artichokes and a number of loose vegetables which spill out into the immediate foreground.
Provenance
