Summary
One of a set of four covered ice pails, soft paste porcelain painted in enamels and gilded, Chelsea-Derby Porcelain (fl.1769-1784), Derby, England, circa 1775. The body with shell-form handles, blue and gold bands and monogrammed 'RH', probably for Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt of Barn Elms (1735-1787), the lid with an open knob. Base marked in puce with a crowned 'D'.
Provenance
Listed in the ‘Inventory of Heirlooms at Stourhead directed to be taken by the Will of the late Sir Richard Colt Hoare Bart.’, 1838, in the China Cupboard, as ‘A Derby China Dessert Service blue white & gold marked R.H. containing a Centre Dish, 20 Side Dishes 2 Sauce Tureens & covers & 36 plates/ A set of same (except the R.H.) containing 1 Centre Dish 14 Side Dishes & 24 plates (see 730641).’ Listed in the 'Inventory of Furniture, Bedding, Carpets, China, Plate, Pictures, Curios, and other effects on the premises of the mansion,' January 1908, in the Cabinet Room, as ‘The two pair of 8” blue and gold Crown Derby with purple mark “RCH” wine coolers.’. Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
