Summary
Oil painting on panel, Personfication of America, attributed to English School, circa 1665. A painted sculpture bust of a woman wearing and surrounded by attributes of the continent of (North) America. She wears a feathered headdress, a beaded necklace and earring, and a beaded apron. The bust sits on a stone plinth in an oval sculptural niche surrounded by flowers (including tulips and roses) and laurel leaves. Below, in front of the plinth, is the head of an antelope. Not recorded in 18th and 19th century inventories; discovered in Dunster Castle summerhouse,1976.
