Summary
Oil painting on panel, Personification of Europe, attributed to English School, circa 1665. A painted sculpture bust of a man wearing and surrounded by attributes of the continent of Europe. He wears a laurel crown and chiton (a type of tunic that fastens at the shoulder worn in Ancient Greece). The bust sits on a plinth in an oval sculptural niche surrounded by flowers (including tulips and roses) and laurel leaves. Below, in front of the plinth, is the head of a horned cow. Provenance
Not recorded in 18th and 19th century inventories; discovered in Dunster Castle summerhouse,1976. Previously on loan, 1975; gift of Lt-Col Geoffrey Walter Fownes Luttrell (1919 – 2007) to the National Trust in 1981.
