Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Fownes Luttrell (1723 - 1780), English School, mid 18th century. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing by the plinth of a column, wearing a buff coloured coat, white cravat, white cuffs and grey wig, his hat under his arm, a whip held in his left hand, his right on the head of a dog. He married his cousin Margaret Luttrell and on moving into Dunster took the additional surname of Luttrell. A provincial portrait, perhaps a copy of a pendant which may have been painted to NT 726091 (DC/P/29). The two paintings are similarly framed and their composition suggests a relationship. This portrait does not appear to be able enough to merit its earlier attribution to Phelps.
Provenance
In Dunster Castle inventory 1910, p.40 as on Staircase; and thence by descent; previously on loan, 1975; gift of Lt-Col Geoffrey Walter Fownes Luttrell (1919 – 2007) to the National Trust in 1981
