Summary
Oil painting on panel, Prince Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales (1594–1612), after Isaac Oliver (Rouen c.1565 – London 1617). A three-quarter-length portrait, in damascened tilting armour, with lace cuffs and ruff, wearing the riband and jewel of the Garter and holding a baton; Prince of Wales's crown on a table at the right. The head and shoulders are based on the miniature by Isaac Oliver in the Royal Collection. He was the eldest child of James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark. On the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603 he travelled south to London with his father, who succeeded to the English throne as James I, the first monarch of the Stuart dynasty. In July of the same year he was invested with the Order of the Garter; he is shown wearing the blue ribbon and badge of the Order in the majority of his portraits
Provenance
According to Lyte, 1909, the portrait was moved from Nethway (occupied by Henry Luttrell (1790- 1867) 'in recent years'; in Dunster Castle inventory, 1910 as in Inner Hall; previously on loan, 1975; gift of Lt-Col Geoffrey Walter Fownes Luttrell (1919 – 2007) to the National Trust in 1981
