Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lady Frances Howard, Duchess of Lennox and Richmond (1578-1639), British (English) School, circa 1624. Full-length portrait, standing to left, a black staff in her right hand, a handkerchief in her left embroidered with the initials FRL; she wears a white dress overlaid with black sackcloth, white lawn sleeves, front panels, headdress and ruff; three black ribbons on her left wrists and one on her right, a mourning ring above (below, as one looks at it) her wedding ring, and a miniature in a closed case on her left breast. She stands in a pavilion (including the flooring) of sable-ermined argent, with a black-bound book on a table behind her.
