Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John Locke (1632 – 1704), after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). A painted oval half-length portrait, to right, head inclined to left, wearing a brown coat. It is one of numerous versions which derive from Kneller's three-quarter-length seated portrait of 1704 at Christ Church, Oxford, including a half-length in the Hermitage.
Provenance
Possibly acquired (along with the 'Kneller' painting of Isaac Newton by Francis Chute (d.1745), brother of John Chute who was an eminent lawyer and intimate with many intellectuals of the day, including Locke; first recorded in the 1842 inventory, in the Ante Room; bequeathed with The Vyne, estate and contents by Sir Charles Chute, 1st Bt (1879-1956)
