Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unidentified Dignitary, aged 60, called Sir Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Alban (1561-1626), in the manner of Daniel Mytens the elder (Delft c.1590 – The Hague 1648), 1620. A full-length portrait, standing to right, bare-headed, his left hand on a green-cloth table, wearing robes of office (probably not, as hitherto assumed, those of the Lord Chancellor). Curiously, the sitter wears neither rings nor any other form of ornament; nor does he hold any wand of office. Greenish background (not original?).
