Summary
Figure, hard-paste porcelain, painted in enamel colours. A lady sits with a book in hand beside a table on which stands a spinning wheel. 'Sleeping Spinner' (Mädchen am Spinnrad) modelled by Michel-Victor Acier, c.1774, after the engraving Les Amusements des Vie privée by Louis Surugue after a painting by Jean Simeon Chardin. Marks: crossed swords in underglaze blue; incised model number '2685', impressed workman's or former's mark, '22', and painter's cipher. Meissen Porcelain Factory, Germany. c.1840-1880.
Provenance
William Wiggett Chute purchased 'four Dresden figures' on 8 August 1846 for £13.0s.0d. By descent to Sir Charles Chute and given to the National Trust in 1956 through the bequest of The Vyne House and Estate.
