Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Michael Warton, British (English) School, 17th century. A half-length painted oval portrait of an ancester of Mary Warton, from Beverley, with long brown wavy hair, wearing armour and a stock with two white tassels. Michael Warton of Beverley (many of the Wartons were called Michael) appears to be wearing civil war armour which suggest that he was the grandfather of Mary Warton wife of the 3rd Baronet. She married Sir James Pennyman in 1692. She was the mother of the builder of the present house. Michael Warton was killed by canon shot at Scarborough castle during the civil war.
